Windows 95/98
You MUST have your original Windows 95/98 install floppies,
CD-ROM, or images on the hard disk in order to complete this installation.
Also, instructions for Windows 95 also apply to Windows 98.
What You Need
You will need the following to install network support:
- An IBM-Compatible PC with Windows 95/98 installed
- Original Windows 95/98 installation media (if not stored on hard disk)
- 30MB of free space on your hard disk
- Instructions and tools for opening your computer
- ISA, PCI, or PCCARD Ethernet card.
- If you purchased a PCCARD Ethernet card, a 3C589 Driver Disk
Procedure
Install the Hardware
- Install the network card in the PC according to your computer's manual. A
quick synopsis of the procedure is below:
- Unplug computer.
- Remove case.
- Select a free ISA or PCI slot and remove the metal cover beside the slot.
- Touch a metal object to discharge any static electricity.
- Press the card into the slot until it drops into place. Do not be afraid to
push.
- Use the screw removed from the metal cover to attach the card to the case.
- Replace case.
Install the Ethernet Drivers
- Boot computer. While booting, Windows 95 will detect the new hardware and
configure it.
- If you installed a 3Com PCCARD Ethernet card: Windows 95 does not come with
a driver for this card. When it is detected, you will either be presented with
a dialog box and three options or with the Device Driver Wizard. Insert the
Driver Disk in your floppy drive and click 'OK', or 'Next' then 'Finish'. This
will load the proper driver on your system. Unfortunately, Windows can
sometimes become confused as to where the files it needs are. If you are
prompted for the file eplc3.sys, enter 'A:\' in the Location box; otherwise
enter 'D:\WIN95' or the location of your Windows 95/98 install media (it may be
stored in the dropbox).
- When the Desktop appears, open the Control Panels (Start=>
Settings=> Control Panels) and open "Network."

- Highlight NetBEUI (if there is more than one instance you will have to
repeat step 4 for each one)

- Remove IPX/SPX from the list: (Skip this step if you have a novell server
on your network)
- Highlight IPX/SPX (if there is more than one instance you will have to
repeat step 5 for each one)
- Click "Remove..."
