WebPerception's Connection Policy:

WebPerception uses different methods to determine when a dial up connection may be terminated:

1: 30 minute Idle Time-out
WebPerception terminates idle connections- that is, connections which go unused for 30 minutes. This seems pretty straightforward to us but some users get confused when they get disconnected while they are writing several long replies to emails. The internet connection you get when you dial in needs to be passing packets (i.e. traffic) or our servers will detect the connection as idle and begin timing it. Our dialup accounts are intended for interactive use by a single individual.
2: Multiple Logins
This goes back to our "interactive use by a single individual" policy. Unfortunately, there are people who use, or allow someone else to use, their account to create a second concurrent dialup session even though they are not paying for it- WebPerception considers this stealing! Members who use or allow multiple logins without paying for them will be warned about the practice, and then, if it contiues, will lose their accounts privileges either temporarily or permanently.
3: Old Connection
This type of connection is terminated because it is very old. This goes back to the "interactive use by a single individual" policy. To get around our policy some users will install software to "fool" our servers into thinking they are active users. Our thought is that most people sleep 8 hours a day plus they do things like eat, drink and use the bathroom, so a connection which is 16 hours old is probably not because of "interactive use by a single individual". Often we'll observe these connections and they'll be idle for a set amount of time - say 10 minutes- then a single ping (ICMP) will come in, then idle exactly 10 more minutes, then another ping. This keep-alive procedure is not appreciated as it means utilization of a modem port which could be used by someone who really wants to use it.
Keep in mind that internet access via modem ports is a commodity we sell and our pricing is based upon a ratio of users to modems (six to one). An individual who consistently monopolizes one modem costs us that modem and raises our ratios across our other modems. So if even a few people utilize a keep-alive procedure it can dramatically decrease other members ability to access our service (without getting busy signals)!
Here's the mathematical proof:
Say we have 192 members logging on to 32 modems- a six-to-one ratio. Ten of those people utilize a keep-alive procedure, so now we have 182 people but ten modems are being kept busy by the keep-alive utility. Our ratio is now 182 members to twenty-two modems or an 8-to-one. If twenty people use a keep-alive utility the ratio is 172 members to twelve modems or a 14-to-one ratio. The higher the ratio of users-to-modems the less chance you have of getting connected!
WebPerception is not saying don't use your modem a lot. What we are saying is "If you want a full-time connection then pay us for it".
