Routers
Some companies ignore them completely.
Some companies fear them completely.
Few companies dedicate the proper resources to them.
It's easy to see what happens when routers go wrong or aren't installed:
unproductive users, lost data and lost revenue.
Even worse is that your network could get hacked into quite easily.
Hackers love high-profile businesses and can be disgruntled employees!!!
The best way to avoid these situations is to have a professional
install and maintain a router at your company's Internet connection.
Whether your company has one computer or an entire computer network, the risks to
running an unprotected network on the internet are HUGE.
WebPerception can give you the benefit of experienced Internet administrators
and the resources accumulated over many years to help you make decisions to better
handle your routing and security needs.
WebPerception wants you to have a safe business on the Internet.
WebPerception offers onsite and offsite Router Configuration for $150 per hour
between the hours of 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday (holidays excepted).
After hours by agreement.
CORPORATE NETWORK SECURITY
Every network is susceptible to security breaches and unauthorized access
from external as well as internal sources. Since the network may contain
sensitive data (such as financial information, personnel files, marketing plans
and other business information) network protection and protection of the data
on the network is important for any organization. Sensitive data must be
protected, not only from users within the network, but from outside users as
well. The network security concerns of organizations expanding their internal
networks and connecting to the Internet must be addressed.
In 1995, the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States estimated
that of all reported cases of unauthorized access to corporate networks 80%
occurred using the Internet. Of considerable concern is that unauthorized
access to information within a network may go undetected, particularly if the
unauthorized user or hacker does not alter the network or its data. An Ernst
& Young study reported that 85% of respondents thought that information
security risks had increased and more than 85% of respondents currently using
the Internet indicated a desire to increase Internet applications, if there
were adequate security solutions available.
Ultimate security is to disconnect from the network. However, for companies
who wish to exploit the commercial potential of the Internet and in so doing
get closer to their customers and bring together remote corporate sites and
employees, this is not an option.
Firewalls are the popular alternative to disconnecting from the network,
creating a barrier between the Internet and the private network. However,
firewalls are only part of a comprehensive security solution.
Optimum security starts with a sound security policy taking into account
network design, the sensitivity of information and the desired user access and
application restrictions. In addition, the security measures must avoid undue
complexity or restraint and should provide systems administrators with adequate
security auditing procedures.
Once the security policy is in place, a company can begin the search for the
product best suited to their security policy.
Security products can be evaluated on the basis of security, implementation and user Features.
Security Features focus on the products ability to
deliver features that meet corporate security objectives, including:
- Security Assurance, independent assurance that the products
technology fulfills its specifications and assurance that it is properly
installed.
- Privilege Control, the degree to which the product can impose user
access restrictions.
- Authentication, the manner in which the product provides or supports
authentication techniques. These techniques include security features such as
source/destination computer network address authentication (where you are),
password authentication (what you know), access control cards (what you have),
and fingerprint verification devices (who you are).
- Audit Capabilities, the ability of the product to monitor network
traffic, including unauthorized access attempts, generate logs and provide
statistical reports and alarms.
Implementation Features focus on the products
ability to deliver features that meet network manager concerns including:
- Flexibility, the products ability to support corporate
security policies as well as present and future network applications.
- Performance, the volume of data throughput and transmission speed
associated with the product.
- Scaleability, the products ability to be deployed in multiple
instances in various machines and security configurations.
User Features focus on the products ability to deliver
features that meet system administrator and end user concerns including:
- Ease of Use, features relate principally to the adoption of a
Graphical User Interface (GUI) that simplifies a system administrators
job of installing and configuring the product in a manner that achieves the
corporate security policy.
- Transparent, the extent to which the product is transparent to the
users. If a security product is cumbersome to use, then the user will bypass
the security. The more transparent security is the more likely the user will
use it.
- Customer Support, the extent to which vendors of products support
customer needs, such as providing prompt access to technical expertise for
installation, use, maintenance and comprehensive training courses.
